LEE SEUNG GI CRITIZED FOR PERFORMING YOO SEUNG JOON SONGS
On December 30, 2011 Lee Seung Gi appeared on the “2011 KBS Gayo Party” and had performed two Yoo Seung Joon Songs, “Na Na Na” and “Passion.” A Netizen criticized Lee Seung Gi on January 2, 2012, for having chosen the song because of Yoo Seung Joon’s past military service incident.
Yoo Seung Joon caused controversy when he decided not to enter into military service after repeatedly stating that he would. He was barred from reentry into South Korea by the ministry of law for gaining U.S. citizenship to avoid his military service in 2002.
The Netizen brought up this fact and had expressed, “I don’t understand why he would have chosen a song from somebody who caused so many problems.”
Finally on January 25, a representative of KBS gave a reply, “The most important job of a director is allowing an artist to bring out their full potential. Lee Seung Gi at the time wanted to perform something that was different from his previous images. That is why he decided to perform “Na Na Na” and “Passion” which he liked to sing when he was younger.”
The representative team also stated, “We feel that it is unfortunate that such a misunderstanding has occurred and we will focus our efforts to make a broadcast that is for the people.”
